SPCA WHISKER WAG'N

Taking animal adoptions on the road! (But not right now.)

The SPCA's NEW WHISKER WAG'N!Generously donated by DELTA SONIC CAR WASH, the SPCA Whisker Wag'n brings vaccinated and sterilized adoptable animals to various parts of the community, reaching potential adopters wherever they are!

The latest unit, a 31-foot recreational vehicle, hit the road November 17, 2006, services more than 1,000 square miles, and is responsible for more than 300 animal adoptions per year. At various times, dogs and puppies, cats and kittens, even pockets pets and farm animals are aboard the vehicle's 6 cat condos and 4 dog kennels!

How do I request a Whisker Wag'n appearance at my special event or business location?

The SPCA Whisker Wag'n is always looking to "get its paws" involved with new and exciting events that offer substantial adoption opportunities!

The requested Whisker Wag'n appearance sponsorship fee is $500 for a maximum 4-1/2 hour appearance. This contribution keeps the Wag'n on the road finding homes and otherwise provides for our homeless animals.

PLEASE NOTE: Each circumstance is unique pertaining to Whisker Wag'n appearance sponsorships! If you have a question regarding the fee, please call the number below.

SPCA Whisker Wag'n appearances are in high demand; to increase the likelihood that the date of your event is available, the Wag'n coordinator generally needs requests to be filed 2 MONTHS PRIOR TO SCHEDULED EVENTS  (subject to change based on availability) !

WHEN CALLING TO SCHEDULE A WAG'N APPEARANCE, PLEASE HAVE AVAILABLE:
  -Name of the Event
  -Time, Date, and Location of Event
  -Anticipated Number of Participants
  -Length of Desired Wag'n Appearance (maximum 4-1/2 hours)
  -Name and Phone Number of Contact Person

**PLEASE NOTE:  There are circumstances that preclude the Wag'n from making a scheduled, sponsored appearance. Although rare, these circumstances include, but are not limited to, high winds or gusts; excessive snow accumulation; frigid temperatures; limited driving visibility due to weather conditions; etc.

To learn more about Whisker Wag'n appearances or to schedule an appearance, please call SPCA Whisker Wag'n Coordinator Amanda Richter: 716-629-3512 or 716-343-1864.

How can I volunteer for the Whisker Wag'n? What's involved?

Each day is different on the SPCA’s Whisker Wag’n depending on the location, the number of animals aboard, and the different personalities of each animal.

There are days with less foot-traffic on the Wag’n which allows volunteers and staff to spend more time with our animals to enhance their time on the mobile adoption unit.

There are also many days during which adoptions are non-stop and volunteers are needed to fill a multitude of tasks!

Volunteers have the choice of driving directly to the Wag'n 's scheduled location or driving to the SPCA's Tonawanda shelter and heading out to the location on the Wag'n. Once on location, volunteers perform a number of duties which include, but are not limited to:

  -Walking Wag'n dogs;
  -Soothing cats in their condos;
  -Handling pocket pets on-board;
  -Answering questions about animals available for adoption and/or SPCA services;
  -Helping to prepare animals for their ride back to the SPCA shelter;
  -Refilling food and water dishes and keeping animal cages neat and tidy.

Volunteering on the Wag'n is a heartwarming endeavor beneficial not only to the animals, but to our volunteers! Potential volunteers are required to attend an official SPCA Volunteer Orientation session prior to being scheduled for this or any other SPCA program.

Contact SPCA Volunteer Coordinator Kristen Schlegel for information on the next scheduled Volunteer Orientation: 716-629-3503 or kristens@spcaec.com. You can learn more about volunteering for the SPCA by visiting our Volunteer Page.

Further questions? Call SPCA Whisker Wag'n Coordinator Amanda Richter: 716-629-3512 or 716-343-1864.
