SPCA Dog Obedience Classes

The SPCA is now offering Canine Basic Obedience classes for dogs 5 months of age and older. This fun program focuses on helping dog owners begin training their dogs in basic obedience. The SPCA's goal is to help dogs become polite, welcome canine companions within their families, using positive reinforcement training techniques.

The Canine Basic Obedience program is a 7-week series of classes consisting of basic cues, including sit, stay, down, and leave it, as well as polite leash-walking techniques. In addition, our instructor will address a common behavioral problem each week.

Classes are held on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the SPCA's 205 Ensminger Rd., Tonawanda auditorium. For more information and to register, please call Sheryl at 629-3537.

Recommended Area Trainers

The following training programs practice similar training philosophies (positive reinforcement training) as the SPCA Serving Erie County. Recommended area trainers are listed below, but PLEASE NOTE: the SPCA Serving Erie County encourages pet owners to educate themselves on the benefits of positive reinforcement training and the adverse effects of punishment-based training. The adverse effects of punishment-based training can include risk of injury to you and your pet, and the potential for negative, possibly permanent damage to your pet’s mental and emotional health. Be sure to interview trainers and ask what methods they use before deciding who is right for you and your pet. The SPCA strongly recommends attending and observing a class prior to registration. For more information, please see this statement by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.

To better serve the community, we have grouped our trainers by services they offer.
Please see our lists of trainers that offer private, in-home training, group classes, or both.  Some trainers may offer specialty services for certain types of dogs/other animals.  Any known specialties will be listed.
