Twenty-Six Students in First through Eighth Grades Receive Awards
Last night, representatives of the SPCA Serving Erie County handed out awards to the student winners of the SPCA’s 115th annual School Contest for Posters and Creative Writing. Awards and prizes were presented to the students by special guest Anne Neville, staff reporter at the Buffalo News, and noted animal-lover!
"I expected the winners of the SPCA's 115th annual Poster and Essay Contest to be intelligent and creative, which they were," said Neville. "But I was most impressed by their deep caring for all kinds of animals -- from Crystal the crab to wild birds, from their dogs (which they named) to cows, horses and even the mules that pulled boats along the Erie Canal."
The reception was held in the SPCA's 205 Ensminger Road, Tonawanda auditorium, which was filled to capacity with winners and their proud families.

Judy Silver Humane Educator of the Year: Kathy Sorce
"Seeing what's in the hearts of these children concerning their love for animals is thrilling," says SPCA Humane Education Director Beth Shapiro. "This contest gives them the opportunity to express something through writing or drawing that they may not be able to communicate any other way. It truly gives us insight as to what we can expect from future generations, and year after year, we are encouraged."
Also encouraging is the level of interest in our adoptable animals by cermony guests! Mikey, a 5-year-old hound mix, was adopted during the cookies and punch reception following the awards ceremony, and went home with Debbie and David of Buffalo, aunt and uncle of Elizabeth Szczupak, a St. Stanislaus school winner (see photo).
For advance notice on next year's contest, and to receive other information on special SPCA Humane Education programs, remember to register as a Pack Member with YourSPCA.org (just click this link), and select Humane Education as one of your special interests.
