November 19, 2016150 Years Ago Today......November 19, 1866
As we approach our 150th anniversary year of 2017, from time to time we'll share with you some milestones that helped create what would ultimately become the second animal welfare organization in North America: our SPCA Serving Erie County! Our first documented event that eventually led to bringing animal welfare to Western New York occurred on Monday, November 19th, 1866. Earlier in 1866, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was formed in New York City by Henry Bergh. On November 19, the Secretary of the ASPCA, William Coventry Henry Waddell, wrote to former United States President Millard Fillmore to inquire about starting a branch in Buffalo, New York.
